Mary Turgeon (front) supposedly on her homestead. While this is possible, for those you of who have seen her homestead, there were no trees and her land was relatively flat. Most likely it was taken somewhere else in Jones County. Click to enlarge.
This 1909 plat shows her homestead in Scovil township. It is about 2-2 1/2 miles from the now "ghost town" of Okaton, South Dakota.

Dear Kitty
Mary and I arrived here at 12:30 and pretty tired. Will go to Mary’s claim tomorrow. Are going to stay for the dance tonight. I saw at.(?) J. K. and he said the girls were all coming together.

When Mary Smith homesteaded in Scovil, it was still part of Lyman County. Jones County was not created until 1917--specifically 15 January 1917
