Below is the actual will and last
testament for Ann Ryan. It begins with "I Ann Ryan..." and
concludes with her legal name "Nancy Ryan". On her will, she
signed it with an "x". Initially we thought that she could read
and write, but now we believe that she could not. This mistake
originated from the notation in the citizenship records for James Ryan
in 1867 - it showed an "x" with "his wife" surrounding the x. We
thought that both James and Ann went to the courthouse on Christmas Eve
- he penned his "x" and she provided the signature. Now we think
that James Sr. did not go to the courthouse with his family.
Instead, Ann signed him up for citizenship, and it was her "x" that we
see in the records. On your left is the legal entry for reading her will and dispersing property to her heirs. |
Nancy left money for her daughters Catherine O'Brien, Maggie Ryan, Mary Boney and Nancy Burke. She left the remainder of her property to her youngest son, Daniel. The relationship she had with Daniel suggests that she may have lived with Daniel in Oklahoma rather than being just a visitor.
