Hiking in the Rockies
Since so many of the Smiths like to hike, we wanted to share with you the hikes taken during our stay in the Vail Valley. We came to the valley wanting to "fly fish", do some hiking, maybe go down the Colorado River on rafts... But as with any tourist area, some things are "too expensive" - or more specifically, cost more than what both Elizabeth and I were willing to spend. Take fly fishing, for example...it was $275 per person per day with a guide. I guess we could have gone to Wal-Mart, bought a license, and asked them where the best fishing holes were. Instead of that, we decided to hike...and we hiked a lot. Here are some of the hikes and photographs we took along the way.

Click on any of the hyperlinks shown below to view what we saw during our hikes in the Rocky Mountains. Most of these hikes were within a few miles from Vail. As the hiking books say, "they are not well marked, but are the most popular hiking trails in Colorado." One hike we wanted to take was the Ski Gondola up Lions Head Mountain, and take the 1.5 hour hike to its summit...however, there was construction around the Gondola entrance...maybe next time. | |||||||||
