Smith Family of Scotland

Introduction

The following was taken from old Scottish census, birth, marriage and death records.  Other Scottish records were previously published in our website.  Part of this family moved to Wisconsin in the early part of the twentieth century.  These were the relatives ‘Irish’ John Smith visited in 1908.

Family Tree

The following graph shows our family tree. What type of records will you see?  These records are for descendants of Owen and Bridget (Greenan) Smith.  Owen and Bridget lived in County Monaghan, Ireland, before moving to Cousland, Midlothian County, Scotland.  The chart below shows what records are included in this document.

Catherine Smith – Daughter of Owen and Bridget Smith

Catherine was the first child born in Scotland to Owen and Bridget (Greenan) Smith.  Her older brother and sisters were all born in County Monaghan, Ireland.  Catharine was born in 1850.  Scotland did not begin collecting birth information until 1855; therefore, we do not have any birth information.  The following is a record of her marriage in the Church of St. David’s on 41 Eskbank Road in Dalkeith.  This church was built in 1854.

Owen Smith – Son of Patrick and Louisa Smith

Owen was the oldest son of Patrick and Louisa Jane (Hamilton King) Smith.  The following shows his birth record.  Owen died in 1897 and is buried in Aghabog, County Monaghan, Ireland.  It is assumed he died in Ireland, since no death record exists for him in Scotland.

Owen Smith – Son of Peter and Helen Smith

Peter Smith was the eldest son of Owen and Bridget Smith.  We are still searching for this family’s records and may have found a lead in an odd source – a death certificate.  The death record is for Peter’s son, Owen.  This record shows the name of the mother, Helen Cairn, who is listed as deceased.  It is also possible her last name may have been spelled as Cairns in other documents.  This will be researched further.

 Unfinished Business

Some areas still need further research.

Margaret Smith – Daughter of Owen and Bridget Smith

Previously we published Margaret’s marriage record to Francis Goodwin(e).  In 1891 we saw several of their daughters living with Margaret’s mother, Bridget Smith.  So where were Francis and Margaret in 1891 we asked?  We found a census record for Francis and Margaret Goodwin living in Bonhill District.  Bridget Smith was living in Dalkeith in 1891.  The 1891 census also shows a Margaret Goodwin living in Dalkeith during this same time period.  Which one is correct?

Francis Goodwin was not listed in the 1901 Scottish census.  Two census records appear that list a Margaret Goodwin.  It is assumed the first one is correct because the age information appears closer to what we expected to see.

Earlier in this document you saw Catharine’s marriage record.  In1891 there were three entries for a ‘Michael Reynolds’ in the Scottish census; however, this is as far as we got in our research.

Peter Smith – Son of Owen and Bridget Smith

By accident w now have some idea where Peter lived during the latter part of the nineteenth century.  At a later time we can search for census records and determine the size and makeup of this family.

1861 Census of Cousland, Edinburgh County, Scotland

This shows all the Smith surnames living in this area of Scotland in 1861.  In our research we found families traveled together.  Is it possible other Smith relatives traveled with our Scottish cousins?
