Hill Family Genealogy

William Hill Family of Killoscully

First of all, making an association to our family is still work in process.

Based on DNA, there is a close relationship with a family that immigrated to Victoria, Australia around 1850.  What makes this connection intriguing is that we believe our family connection is through the Hill family of Tipperary.

Since starting our genealogy research 12 years ago (2004), we have learned very little about our ancestor Edward Hill.  We know that he married Elizabeth McDonnell, our great grandmother, in Killoscully; and as such, we see several baptisms before making their way to the United States. We also know that our Hill family, like many others in the Keeper Hill area, were evicted from their farms by landlords motivated by extracting more money from their tenants.

When we examine the "DNA Circle" of both the Smith family and the Corboy/Hill family of Victoria, we only show four families in the Ancestry.Com database that are considered "cousins with a common heritage".  Three of the four families connect to Edward Hill and Margaret McDonnell Hill of Allamakee, Iowa.  The fourth family is Maureen's family of Victoria, Australia.

Because this relationship is at a fourth cousin level, we can estimate how this relationship looks to the us.

As an example, our grandmother's sisters descendents have placed their DNA on ANCESTRY.Com; and they show up typically as either second or third cousins.  The second cousin relationships in Ancestry.com are from mom's cousins, and we see their children showing up as third cousins (like Mike Grahl).

In looking at the chart below, we are leaning towards the theory that our Edward Hill was a sister of Margaret Hill, wife of Michael Corboy, and daughter of William Hill and Winifred Dwyer. Pushing the relationship out to the next generation is possible (e.g. William Hill's father, whose name may also be Edward). But this would make our relationship more distant, more likely 5th cousins. As the records below reflect, Margaret's parents were married in 1797, and as our ancestor Edward was born between 1811 and 1813, it is all together possible that William is a direct ancestor to the Smith family. But...we may never know for certain because Baptism Records for this parish are missing between Oct 1, 1804 to July 15, 1812.
