We knew that we were related to the Patrick Smyth family in Bear Creek, but only speculated that we may be related to Terns Greene (family that lived next to the Rooneys, as reflected in the 1860 census ) or Tearance Greenau (grave stone engraving at the time of his death in 1866).  Terence Greenan (Green) is not a common name, and we found only one Terence Greene in the New York City area, and he was an inmate in a local penitentiary.  While there was some wishful thinking that this was our great grandmother's brother, we became convinced that Terns Greene was her brother - the same person who brought Catherine's children to America in 1850.  Catherine Smith and her children shared a home with a sister Alice McCabe and brother Terence Greenan in Brooklyn (see 1850 census). 

We had difficulty proving this theory until recently.  The proof came from Dave Thompson, who took the photographs of our family cemetery markers.  He wrote:  "These four markers were located next to each other (which I took photos of): (L-R) Patrick & Margaret (Gravon) Symth marker - Catharine Greenan-Smyth-Rooney marker - Owen Smith marker and then Tearance & Mary Greenau."  He noticed that they were sharing a family plot, and suspected that we would want their pictures as well.   As we looked up other variations of "Greenau" we saw that there were other Greenan families that also used this variation to spell their names.   UPDATE (08/20/07):  AFTER RECEIPT OF PATRICK AND MARGARET SMYTH'S MARRIAGE LICENSE, WE LEARNED THAT MARGARET'S MAIDEN NAME WAS NOT GRAVON...INSTEAD IT WAS GREENAN.  WHAT WE HAVE FOUND IN RICHLAND COUNTY IS THE GREENAN FAMILY PLOT...

More importantly, it told us how we were related to the McCluskys, which was another mystery to us. The McCluskys had attended funeral services in South Dakota, and we knew their was a familial connection...but didn't know how.  The connection was through Terence's daughter, Alice.  She married into this family.  As a matter of interest, "Alice" has been a family name for generations based on our research.  Our great aunt Genevieve's middle name is...also Alice.
