Patrick and Margaret (Greenan) Smyth
were "Irish" John's Wisconsin neighbors and cousins. John's mom was
born Catherine Greenan. Catharine's first husband was Peter Smyth, and
her second husband was William Rooney. The Patrick Smyths are buried
beside "Irish" John's mom in Keyesville, Wisconsin. All news items in
this group are about Patrick and Margaret's descendants. Sometimes
their last name appears as 'Smyth' and sometimes as 'Smith' However,
their ancestral surname, like ours, is 'Smyth'.
Patrick's parents were
William Smyth and Mary McCannan or McCanna. His parents
lived in Corravilla Townland, Aghabog Civil Parish, County Monaghan,
Ireland. Margaret died in 1880 a young woman of 45 years.
On November 11, 1889, Patrick married Catherine Davey in
Keyesville. Catherine was born in County Sligo, Ireland, daughter of
James Scanlan and Margaretha McCoon.
You may have read Patrick's obituary found elsewhere on our website. It
reads: Spring Green Home News, June 11, 1896 "Sudden Death of a
Bear Valley Citizen"
- Relatives and neighbors of Mr. Patrick Smyth of Bear Valley were
shocked by his sudden death on Monday morning, June 6th. Mr. Smyth had
just walked over from his home to talk with some men at work on the road
nearby. He had not spoken more than a couple of words when he fell to
the ground and was dead in an instant. He was subject to heart trouble,
which was undoubtedly the cause of his death. He was born in County
Monaghan, Ireland, and was 64 years of age. He came to this county when
quite young, and located at
Bear Valley, being one of the
first settlers of his town. Mr. Smyth was in good circumstances, and
leaves a family of six children well provided for. These are Mrs.
Benton,
Mrs. John Sullivan,
James, John, Alice and Peter Smyth...."
The obituaries you read now are for Patrick and Margaret's
descendants. One descendant, Peter Smyth, was "Irish" John's travel
buddy in Ireland.
