Frank and Catherine (Murrin) McGonigle’s daughter,
Mary McGonigle Tuttle, married Anthony “Tony” Mulloy. According to
family lore, Tony worked as a jockey until breaking his leg riding a
horse. Tony was single and his cousin, Mary McGonigle Tuttle, was sent
over to help him recover. Mary and Tony fell in love and were married
in Illinois.
Frank McGonigle and Kate Murrin lived in Killybegs
before moving to America. Tony Mulloy’s parents were Anthony Mulloy and
Mary Murrin. Mary Murrin’s parents were Patrick Murrin and Margaret
Meehan of Belvidere, Illinois. We believe Mary McGonigle Tuttle and
Tony Mulloy were related to each other through the Murrin connection.
The elder Anthony Mulloy lived in Glenties, Innishkeel Civil Parish,
County Donegal before moving to America.
Family Tree
The following graph shows how the Smith siblings
are related to the Mulloy family. Several contributors to our website
are Mulloy descendants.

Tithe Applotment Records
We have written about Irish tithe records
previously. Irish genealogists consider these records as census
substitutes because so few Irish census records exist prior to 1901.
These tithes were assessed against all land owners and land leasers
alike. It was a tax paid for upkeep of the Established Church of
Ireland (Anglican), and was owed regardless of church membership. Many
Irish resented this tax, and in the south many Irish quit paying
tithes. Tithe Applotments were collected from 1824 to 1837. The
records we found for Innishkeel Civil Parish are dated 1833
The following records are a subset of tithes
recorded for this parish. The surnames below are associated with our
own Smith family tree. Surnames highlighted include Mollay (Mulloy or
Molloy) and McGonigle. Townland names below in some cases are ‘old
spelling’. It was not until much later that spelling was standardized
for Irish townlands.
