One way to verify family information is by examining birth, marriage and death records.  Records in Quebec are written in French, and these records verified what we already knew about our French Canadian family.  There were a few surprises.  The Patry surname originally appeared as Patris, Philias Turgeon was born Joseph Philias Turgeon, and  Merida Patry birth name was Marie Merida Patry.  Originally we suspected her birth name was Merilda Patry. 

Birth records show names of parents and godparents.  Witness names appear on marriage records.  The following chart shows our family tree.  We found Canadian records for those names highlighted in ‘red’ below.

This record suggests the new baby was baptized ‘Joseph Philias’ the day before this record was written (baptise ue la veille)

Merida was baptized in this parish (baptise de cette paroisse) of Beaumont

She was born of legitimate marriage (legitime mariage) between Louis Patry, tradesman (commercant) and Angele Shink from the parish (de cette pariosse) of Beaumont.  Godfather (parriane) -- Charles Couture

Godmother (marraine) -- Lisa Loupulte.

Where did Philias live?  “domicilié Territoire Dakota les Etats-Unis d'Amérique – domiciled in Dakota Territory in the United States of America

What was his occupation?  cultivateur - farmer

Where did Merida live?  “domicilié de cette paroisse” – domiciled in this parish

Where were they married?  Saint-Étienne parish in Beaumont 

Cesaire Turgeon and Jeanne Marie Trachy are listed as Philias Turgeon’s parents.  Cesaire was a farmer in this parish.  Merida’s parents were Louis Patry, farmer, and Angele Shink.  You will notice Quebec authorities were preoccupied with whether a birth was due to the couple being legitimately married (legitime mariage).  The Patry family lived in this parish.
