Peter F. Smyth was Irish John Smith's traveling
companion. According to one news report John traveled with a party of
other people to Ireland. From Irish John's log we know he left
Wisconsin in June of 1908 and hit Ireland on or about July 3rd.
Peter F. Smyth's address is listed as 121 W. Dayton in Madison,
Wisconsin. The 1910 and 1920 census records show where Peter lived in
Madison . In 1920 he also lived with his brother, John W. Smyth, and
his sister, Mary Benton. Mary Benton was Susan McPhillips Smith's
bridesmaid. Two houses away lived James P. Smith and his family. James
was Peter's brother, and we know he lived in Lone Rock, Wisconsin,
before moving to Madison. |

Peter Smyth Store
Peter F. Smyth Grocery Store Description: Interior of
the Peter F. Smyth Grocery Store, located at 1202 West Dayton Street,
Madison, Wisconsin, USA.
In 1920, Peter F Smyth was living with other siblings,
Mary Benton and John W. Smith. A couple houses down lived a James Smith
family (his occupation was grocery clerk.) It appears that the Smyth
family lived and worked together.
Also, in 1930 the Madison census shows the following Smiths living
together - Patrick, Thomas and Bridget (Scottish bunch). One of the
brothers occupation was listed as butcher. The other might have been
store clerk. Bridget's occupation had something to do with hair
dressing. Unfortunately, I misplaced my copy, and I don't have access
to the Ancestry census records.

Presumably this is one of
the Smyths behind the counter. We know that Peter Smyth
traveled to Ireland with Irish John Smith in 1910, so we can
assume that they were both about the same age. Because
this gentlemen looks as if he's in his 30s, we would speculate
that he is James Smyth. |
