Susan Smith’s obituary listed her brother Owen McPhillips as one of the pallbearers. It also mentioned that he lived in Kimball, South Dakota. This is the first census to show Owen living in Kimball during the twentieth century. By this time he was married and had one son.
Harold was born in South Dakota; therefore, we can infer that Owen and Alice moved to South Dakota sometime after 1910 but before their son was born – possibly in 1912 or 1913. Alice was from Iowa which might indicate that Owen was living in Iowa before moving to South Dakota.
It is unclear what happened to the rest of the McPhillips clan during this period. Susan’s obituary mentioned a McPhillips from Minneapolis.
The following table lists the McPhillips buried in St. Margaret’s Cemetery. Only Alice and Owen are verified as relatives; however, the other names are included here for interest.

Michael was the second oldest son of John and Susan Smith. Michael married Catharine Fitzgerald and according to the 1930 census, Michael’s mother-in-law was living with the family. The census also indicates that Michael did not serve in the military. Irish John only had one son who served in the military and that was his fourth oldest son, John. What is interesting about this census is with one of the questions asked: Do you have a radio? In this case the family states they do have a radio, which would also indicate that they had electricity hooked up to their farm.
Michael’s farm was located in Kimball township as part of an unincorporated part of the city. Michael owned his farm and it does not appear there was any encumbrance.
