 Introduction

You already know about our Smith kin from Scotland.  We suspect this branch of Smiths moved to Scotland with either family or friends.  What do you expect to find here?  You will see certain surnames (Greenan, McCarville, Coyle, McPhillips and Smith) found in the 1851 Scottish census for Midlothian County.  These surnames are associated with our family.  The Smith family tree appears below:

Midlothian County

Midlothian County, or Edinburghshire, is where our Irish cousins lived.  From County Monaghan they moved to a small village in Scotland called Cousland.  Within 30 years this family could be seen living in Leith, Portobello and Dalkeith.  These were ‘Irish’ John Smith’s cousins and we believe he played a strong role in bringing them over to America.

The maps below show where they lived.  The entire area of Midlothian County can be seen in the map above, and it includes Edinburgh and surrounding environs.  You can see that the maps below are color coded, which indicates a different parish.  The maps show the location of Leith, Portobello and Dalkeith.  Cousland is located in a rural area southeast of Edinburgh.

 Bridget and Owen Smith

Who were these Scottish cousins?  They were descendents of Owen and Bridget Smith.  We believe Owen and our great-great-grandfather, Peter Smith, were brothers.  Owen’s grandson, Patrick Smith, lived with Irish John Smith and his family in the early part of the twentieth century.

Bridget Smith (father: Patrick Greenan, mother: Margaret McCarval)

Owen Smith (father: John Smith, mother: Susan Coyle)

Irish John Smith married Susan McPhillips

Cousland

Cousland is a village centered in a lime producing area.  Cousland, also known as Coukesland, is found in Cranston Parish (i.e., Crane’s district or resort) and is located near Edinburgh.  On the south side of the village exists an ancient cemetery and ruins of an old church.  Cousland means ‘Cow’s Land’.  In my previous writing I forgot to include a map of the Cousland area.  My bad!  Below you will find an old map of this area.  Note there were two Limestone Quarries adjacent to the town.  We assume Owen Smith and his eldest son, Peter, worked in these local mines.

Irish Surnames found in the 1851 Midlothian Census

The census results below are color coded to show various family units.  You will see the term ‘GROS Data’ found on the following charts.  GROS refers to the ‘General Register Office for Scotland’ and the number indicates the house or flat where each family unit lived.

Obviously more information about these Coyle families can be found in the original census documents.  We did find additional information for some of the families listed, and present it below for your review.  The first two families listed are identified as ‘lodger’, which suggests they were staying with friends or family.  They may have been recent immigrants to Scotland.  Based on the GROS number it is very possible the next two families lived very close to each other.

GROS Number: 685/01 009/01 004

Ann Coyle, 40 years old, identified as a lodger, married, no occupation listed, born in Ireland, living in Edinburgh Greyfriars area

Ann Coyle, 7 years old, identified as a lodger, born in Ireland, living in Edinburgh Greyfriars area

Hugh Coyle, 17 years old, identified as a lodger, no occupation listed except ‘Scholar’, born in Ireland, living in Greyfriars area

Magan Coyle, 47 years old, identified as a lodger, occupation listed is ‘Agricultural Labourer’, born in Ireland, living in Greyfriars area

Margaret Coyle, 1 year old, identified as a lodger, no occupation listed, born in Ireland, living in Greyfriars area

GROS Number:  685/01 009/01 006

Based on the GROS number it would appear this Coyle family and the previous Coyle family lived close together.  This might suggest a close family relationship.

Ann Coyle, 24 years old, listed as a lodger, occupation listed as ’charwoman’, married, born in Ireland, and living in the Edinburgh Greyfriars area

James Coyle, 26 years old, listed as a lodger, occupation listed as ‘rail labourer’, married, born in Ireland, and living in the Edinburgh Greyfriars area

GROS Number: 692/02 014/02 002

Mary Coyle, 2 years old, family relationship identified as ‘D’, born in Edinburgh, living in the Leith South area

Mary Coyle, 32 years old, family relationship identified as ‘W’, born in Ireland, living in the Leith South area

Terence Coyle, 2 months old, family relationship identified as son, born in Edinburgh, living in the Leith South area

John Coyle, 35 years old, family relationship identified as ‘head’, occupation listed as ’Labourer (Dock)’, born in Ireland, living in the Leith South area

Very likely most Coyle families living in Scotland during this time were recent immigrants.  Why did they move to Scotland?  By 1851 the Irish famine was ending and many landlords were evicting tenant farmers.  With no place to live many of these tenant farmers moved away, and some moved to Scotland.

Smith Surnames

In 1851 there were 3,331 Smiths living in Midlothian County.  Possibly some may have been related to our own family; however, there is no way of knowing this for sure.
