The Rules

Send your picture into Terry and he will post them on the website.
Please e-mail your votes to Merida.  Each person can vote for their
first, second, and third favorites.  Even if you did not participate (as
long as you are a member of the immediate family) you can vote.
(This is to make sure VJ cannot pull his large family behind one person -
therefore Jim and Cathy are unable to vote)!

Voting ends at 6pm MST on Christmas Day.

I will send a text out to those that may wish to participate that
I do not have e-mails for - Kate, Joe, Megan (Steve's whole family).

If during the night you wish to text pictures of your family to each other
that would be great.  We are going to fondue at my house with all the Smith girl's and our families.  The goal this year is not to start any fires!

I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas!  I for one cannot wait
to see everyone's entries.  I hate to even think of what next year's
Christmas competition is going to be!!!

Ugly Sweater Contest

Last year we had the ginger bread house contest...and it was obvious that "some" of the brothers and sisters will go to extremes to win. This year Wendy suggested an "ugly sweater" contest, so it will be interesting to see what the entries for this year will be. The posting starts at 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve...stop by again to see all entries.

Entry # 1:

Tim & Laurel Smith

A black sweater, not a typical Christmas color, festooned by poinsetta flowers surrounding their "children" (L-E) Mango, Burt & Tweeky. Burt is wearing a Santa hat. Tim & Laurel have been laughing all week at their entry.

Entry # 2:

V. J. and Julie Smith

Just an explanation about our entry.  Back in 2006, there was  rib making contest and the three entrants were me, Tom Svendsen and Mike Kenton.  I won the trophy (as seen wearing the sweater).  There has been a lot of bantering coming from Wendy and Tom as they believe I stole the coveted title.

This is brought up several times a year. So, that is why we took that little shirt and put it on the trophy.

Heck, we laughed pretty hard at the final product.

...(Terry) I understand the signficance now. Pretty funny.

Elizabeth and Terry Smith

A "family sweater" for Elizabeth and the kids. As the NJ Smiths were certain that Wendy & Tom would electrify their entry, the photo below shows that this sweater was electrified as well. $10 sweater from Old Navy.

Entry # 4

Tom Ackerwold

A unique sweater indeed...it looks like a hunting jacket adorned with yards of Christmas garland. While I am not certain how useful it will be in his future hunting days...perhaps the other hunters will think that its a new line of sportwear inspired by Liberace :)

Entry # 5

Megan and Casey Godfrey

Inspired by the movie "Christmas Vacation". This is another eletrified entry with at least one squirrel...and perhaps a Kuola Bear...hard to say. It is something that the Gruenwold's would wear...

While "ugly", I think that I have seen these worn in less sophisticated states like North Dakota (only kidding!!!). I don't want to offend anyone...so make that New Jersey...we take abuse all the time anyway...

Ann Smith

Quite the wreath. Looks like candy canes are integrated in the wreath. Like the bow...very festive...and quite ugly.

I believe this would be "coveted" in Texas...

Shades of "Where's Waldo"...this shirt strains my eyes...good job, Ben.

Sam Kenton

Sam has been watching too many episodes of "Mad Men". While the vest is considered ugly today, I think it would have fit in quite well in the 60s.

Quite homely...looks like green chest hair. I don't believe its a wreath - it looks like garland wrapped up in a big "mush".

OK...it is clever. And it would not be something that I'd be in public with. So it definitely is "ugly".

Barb Kenton

See Story at end of photo entries that tells th story of this sweater that has become a family heirloom.

While not my "cup of tea", it is compelling...particularly the elfen neckline. May be popular in certain circles.

The Goodiers

Well...there were no restrictions that pets could not participate. I am surprised that the Goodier dog didn't put up "a fuss".

‘Ugly' shirt, beautiful gift

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" is an adage that describes my favorite Christmas present. It arrived on Christmas morning 16 years ago and has been worn every holiday since.

Sam, my oldest at 15, had just earned his driver's license and was taking his younger brother, Joe, to the mall for the first time on their own to purchase gifts.

They found a kiosk that sold Christmas items and while there bought me a black gaudy sweatshirt depicting a puff-painted Christmas tree laden with "rhinestone" garland and ornaments. The addition of the same materials along the collar and sleeves just added to the design.

They were really happy with their choice that morning, and I immediately donned the new purchase and wore it proudly the rest of the day.

Well, little did the boys realize that I would be wearing that same shirt for every following Christmas. The boys aren't nearly as thrilled about the present as they were years ago, but it will always remind me of a time when they were young and really felt they had chosen the perfect present.

The item has become a legend in our family as my brother, VJ, has even included it in one of his speeches. As my sisters say, "It's hard to tell what year it is because Barbara is always wearing the same shirt."

Our family likes competition, and this year we are having an ugly sweater/shirt contest. An email to the family members about the contest contains the line, "We know who's going to win, but the rest of us can still compete for second and third place."

I'll just have you know that that "ugly sweatshirt" is still one of the prettiest things I own. When I die, I plan to be buried in it; I don't want any family members fighting over such a priceless gift!
