Smyth Homeland You will see 5 civil parish maps - one of Aghabog, which is where our Smyth family claims as its ancestral home. The others are for adjacent civil parishes of Drumsnat, Ematris, Killeevan and Kilmore. They show the locations of town lands located within their parish borders. Over the past few months we have talked about each of these town lands, and this is the first time where we can show where each townland is in relation to each other. Looking at Aghabog you can see how close it is to both Ematris and Kilmore. The Australian Smyth connection also mentioned he was in contact with a descendant of a Smyth who lived in Lisnaveane Townland, Ematris Parish. Lisnaveane lies just below Faltagh Civil Parish in Aghabog. Rockcorry is the largest town in Ematris. As the crow flies, it is between 2 to 3 miles from Aghabog. It appears the residents of Lisnaveane would have attended the Catholic Church in Rockcorry. See Page Two. In Latnamard Church you see evidence that some residents of Kilmore Civil Parish, Drumsnat Civil Parish and Killeevan Civil Parish were parishioners. Kilmore is of interest because of an odd coincidence. You will see in the Aghabog tithe records during the early part of the nineteenth century there lived a Terry Greenan. In the Griffith Valuation Survey taken between 1847 and 1864 you don't see his name there anymore. However, in Kilmore (Urcher Townland) you see a Terence Greenan. This is the only place in Monaghan you see this name for the Griffith Valuation. Also, two other names appear which are interesting - Catharine Smyth and Patrick Greenan. These facts still interest me. Note: Catherine Smith and Terence Greenan were sister and brother (Catherine was John Smith's mother). Today, the Catholic Church in Ireland doesn't have all the split parishes like it did in yesteryear. Now there is only the parish of Killeevan-Aghabog, which Latnamard is part. The town of Newbliss in Killeevan may be the closest market town to Aghabog. It is between 2 to 3 miles from Aghabog. There is an old church in Killeevan where the Catholics may have been burying their dead during the days of the Penal Laws. |
