Barney P. Moran draft card WWII. Barney had registered for both WW1 and WW2. By 1942, he was in his 40’s, but was willing to serve his country… While it doesn’t appear he served in the armed services during this time, it is clear that he was unmarried. |

On his registration card, it shows that Barney worked for the Underpinning & Foundation company. As their name indicates, this company builds foundations for large building projects. The public documents show they built foundations for the New York Subway, hotels and high rise buildings in the early 20th century, and by WWII they were building underpinnings for the government. |

Manifest The boat departed from several destinations including San Juan, Puerto Rico and Panama Canal Zone and Trinidad (today Trinidad an Tobago). At the time of his arrival, his age was listed as 48. We know that this “Barney Moran” was our relative because his birth date and place of birth, Birmingham, Alabama, matches our records. As his employer, Underpinnings and Foundation Co, was working many ship-building projects, its likely that Barney was assigned to one of these projects in Central America. |
Looking for info on BARNIE/BARNEY P. MORAN. He was born in Birmingham, AL in the 1890's. I have dates from 1890 to 1895 for him. I have found him on the 1900 AL Jefferson Cnty census wil his father Bernard Moran, & siblings James, Julia, Kate & Mabel. I found him listed on the 1920 census with his sister Kate who had married a Rittenburg(very hard to read can make out correct spelling). Her children were May A., Baxter & Katherine. |

Charles C. Witmer, an experienced pilot who had previously instructed army and navy personnel, was in charge of the Curtiss Flying School. The land school was at N.W. l7th Avenue and 2Oth Street, while hydroplane instructions were given on Biscayne Bay near the Royal Palm Hotel where Witmer was staying. Classes began on January 12 and lasted through April. The four graduating students were Barney Moran, Augustine Parla, W.Vaughan. and Senor Martini. Witmer's stay in Miami was brief, just a few months in 1912 and possiblv another vlsit in 1916, and he eventually settled in Santa Barbara, California.
