Tim wrote the other day:
"I am sending you two 1935 South Dakota census records. One for Ruth Ryan and the other for Adelaide McGonigle. It suggests Adelaide was born in Cripple Creek, Colorado, and not Leadville. This had me scratching my head and I was trying to figure this one out. We have Grandma's obituary online and I also compared it to the baptismal records you received from the Catholic Church in Leadville. They indicate Addie was born in Leadville."
He later goes on to say:
"The census taker asked Frank where Adelaide was born. He may not have remembered Leadville and mentioned Cripple Creek instead. After all, who else would see the census taker's records? It is also a lesson why you should not always accept anything you read in government records."
But...it does raise a good question. How does Cripple Creek fit into our family history? I'm hoping someone out there has an answer. Tim raises the possibility that the McGonigles lived there before moving to Leadville. This is highly plausible as some "enterprising citizens" of Cripple Creek created a hoax that eventually drew thousands of people to Cripple Creek, and its possible that the McGonigles initially lived in the Cripple Creek aread.
Anyone have an answer?
