Irish John Smith’s Journal

This is as best as I can transcribe this old journal.  With age my eyes don’t see as well as they did when I was a young man.  Be that as it may, I did not edit this document nor correct any misspellings.  I tried to maintain the spelling and grammar as was originally written.

June 4, 1908

Left Home arrived in Madison Wis 6th.  Left Madison June 15th 1908 

Arrive in New York June 17th 1908, very warm,  96.0 in the shade 

June  25th 1908.  Left N. J. for Europe on the Stemer Arabick.  Pleasant Pasage 

June 27th 1908

June 28th Sunday, Paintin the Boat Sea Smoth

The Sea is Rough and Cool to day 

July 1st 1908 

Pleasant Sun Shiney weather.  Two ships in Sight in the morning

No Stop no Swich go right a long.   

July 2nd 1908 

Stormy morning with rain and Head wind all voyage.  Hadnth good nerve

Miste a meal.   

July 3rd 1908   

Very fine morning .  Sea Calm

One man died and one child.   The man was Bueried at Sea.  It was a Sad Seen.    

11 o clock A.M.  Land in Sight 

8 P.M. the Cost of Irland is raugh a good Deal.   Like the missoura bluffs from the Ships

July 4th 1908 

Qunestown the Senery is Splendid from Quenestown.  To Dublin.  Mowine Abbey.  Mallow.  

July 5th 1908 

Fine morning.  Dublin went to mass to Jesuit Church  Herier it is very old Church.

Saw OConnlls monument and Nelsons.  Went a long the Dublin Bay on the Clontaf Rad

Crossed the Liffy River and Kings Canall an a to Phonex Park.

July 6th 1908

Pleasant morning Sun Shining.  Went to Colage Green.  Sat down at the Base of Grattins Monument and went through Tranity Colage and Saw Bryan Baroos Harp.  Horn and boks to no end.

July 7  Pheonix Park. 

Forget you no I never saw

As long as I can whistle

I might as well Forget to yell

250 / & Freight, 160 ft base.  Wellington  …   Miss Elizabeth Smi..    John & myself landed in Balabay.  Wednesday July 8. 1908 at 18:30 oclock in fore noon.

From Ballabay we went to Monagan roads got there at 5 oclock.  From there we went to John Smith.   

July 9.   

Left Smith for Terry Greenan 

Page 11: 

Got there at noon.  Stayed there all that day night.   

July 10   

Left Terrance Greenans to go to John Greenan.  Got to John at 8 oclock.  In the afternoon we went to Terrecorbit chapel and cemetery.   Carne Falg and stayed all night at Johns.   

July 11 

July 13th 1908

Went Back to Urcher to say goodby.

July 14th

Went to see my Cousin E. Greenen in Mill town.  Found them all well.   

July 15th 1908

Left my Cousins Smiths for Dundalk to see McPhillips.   

July 16th 1908

Went to see my cousins Peter Greenen .

Page 13:  

In Black Rocks.  Fund them all well it was very rainiy.   

July 17th 1908   

Morning Bright and Cear.  Going to Belfast.  We are in Bratanic Gardin.  3 P.M.  it is delightful to see the Flours and the walks.  Arrive in town 11. a.m.

July 18. 1908 

On Bord Ship to Greeock, Scotland it is a Fine morning

Sun Shining and the Hills Looks fine took train at Greeock to Glasgow the to Edenburow then to Portbello and arrived in my Cousins 2 P.M.

Went to a dog dog race it was Fine it was grand. Portabello is on Froth. 

July 19 1908 

Fine morning went to 9 a.m. mass with my Cousin Patrick Smith then went to See my Cousins Margrt & John and the
